If the person you've deleted keeps trying to contact you, you can go one step further. From their profile page, tap the "…" button in the top right and flick the switch labeled Block. 

After blocking someone, you can view your Blocked List by going to Me > Settings > Privacy > Blocked List.

Unblock your friends by going to enable Unblock button on their profile page.
